A Growing Number of College Students Are Switching Majors - Here's What's Behind It
""This is one of the clearest signals we've seen that students are rethinking what their futures are in response to AI," Dr. Courtney Brown, vice president of impact and planning at Lumina Foundation, stated."
""Students are moving in both directions when it comes to tech fields. Some are switching into tech because they see opportunity in AI, while others are moving away because they're worried about disruption," Brown explained."
""I don't think students are seeing that AI is going to replace those," Brown noted regarding students in humanities, healthcare, and natural sciences."
A Gallup and Lumina Foundation survey of 3,800 college students revealed that 16% have changed their major due to AI's impact on entry-level jobs. Nearly 42% have considered switching majors for the same reason. Most students who switched moved to social sciences (26%), business (17%), and tech (13%). Students in tech and vocational programs are most open to changing majors, while those in humanities, healthcare, and natural sciences are less likely to do so, as they perceive AI's impact differently.
