The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) has eliminated all references to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) from its accreditation criteria. This decision aligns with a broader federal movement against DEIA initiatives, influenced by policies from the Trump administration. In an email, ABET officials cited the "significant challenges" faced by institutions in implementing DEIA programs as a basis for their decision. The removal of DEIA materials is part of ABET's response to increased scrutiny of higher education accreditation.
Recognizing the heightened scrutiny of higher education and accreditation-including recent directives and legislation in the United States-the ABET Board of Directors recently approved the removal of all references to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) from our accreditation criteria and supporting documents.
These changes were made in response to the significant challenges many institutions, academic programs, and industry partners face in implementing and sustaining DEIA initiatives.
