Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are grappling with financial insecurity due to federal funding cuts initiated by the Trump administration. Leaders are particularly concerned around programs like Pell Grants, federal work-study, and various other federal aids essential for their operation. The recent halt and subsequent uncertainty surrounding federal grants have led to a chilling effect among school administrators. Despite federal claims of protections for these institutions, the ongoing cuts are raising fears of losing critical resources that support the education of the majority of their Black students.
Most students at HBCUs rely on Pell Grants or other federal aid, and a fifth of Black college graduates matriculate from HBCUs, highlighting their critical funding needs.
There's real fear that resources could be lost at any moment - even the ones schools know they need to survive, illustrating the tense atmosphere around funding.
