Utah Prison Grads Earn College Certificates
"We have gotten really good at creating meaningful educational experiences for students who are studying online, and I subscribe to the philosophy that online education should be compelling and not just convenient."
"[Incarcerated students] are participating in the same courses as students in our traditional program, so the quality of the experience is consistent."
The Ensign Prison Education Program, launched in October 2024, has enrolled nearly 500 incarcerated students, offering certificates in small business and project management. The program aims to prepare students for employment post-release through a workforce-aligned model. Ensign College president Bruce Kusch emphasizes the importance of providing meaningful online education experiences. The program targets students at least a year away from release, allowing them to complete a professional foundation course designed to prepare them for college-level work and job searching.
