Hallstatt water goddess joins Munich state collection
Briefly

A prehistoric statuette from the Hallstatt culture, discovered in 2022 in Monchstockheim during highway construction, will be displayed at the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection in Munich. Conservation work is complete, and the statuette, which likely represented a water goddess, will be officially handed over on January 30th. Though it is damaged, insights from its features and its discovery site suggest a strong connection to water cults. Other artifacts found alongside it, dating from the early Hallstatt period, also hint at significant ritualistic practices.
The statuette is interpreted as a water goddess, linked to a prehistoric channel believed to have collected water for the Hallstatt settlement.
The statuette’s detailed features and design suggest it was deliberately placed in the channel, indicating its importance in cultic practices related to water.
