In 2024, Ireland's medieval heritage sites drew over 13.8 million visitors, with Kilkenny Castle and the Rock of Cashel among the top attractions. These sites highlight Ireland's Norman and ecclesiastical past, revealing rich architectural histories. Minister of State Kevin Moran emphasized the importance of state investment in preserving these landmarks. Additional attention was given to sites like Trim Castle, known from the film Braveheart, and Clonmacnoise, a prominent monastic settlement. Visitor numbers have risen at several locations, reflecting a growing appreciation for regional heritage sites, while more projects are planned to enhance public access.
From medieval castles to ancient monuments - the continued investment by the State in our rich and unique heritage portfolio is essential for the safeguarding and preservation of our built heritage.
We work hard to conserve and protect them, and present them to public. I am pleased to see that a diverse range of regional sites like Dungarvan Castle is welcoming more visitors.
