The extraordinary discovery of manuscripts in a Transylvanian church tower offers a rare glimpse into medieval Romania's intellectual and cultural life, dating back to the 9th century.
Professor Dincă stated, 'When I first encountered the books, I immediately noticed the disposition of the volumes according to a certain historical typology: bibles and biblical texts, patristic, theology etc.' This suggests a carefully curated collection that had been deliberately hidden.
The cache includes approximately 139 printed volumes from between 1470-1600, two manuscripts from the early 16th century, and around 60 original documents from the 14th to 16th centuries.
This find was described by Biblioteca Batthyaneum as a scene straight out of an Indiana Jones adventure, highlighting the challenges faced, including managing nesting pigeons.
