'In the Lost Lands,' directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich, is the first film adaptation of George R.R. Martin's work since 1987. This dark fantasy Western incorporates a new antagonist, a religious cult, while largely staying true to the original short story. The couple's partnership has evolved, as this is their first project as producers. They emphasize their deep respect for Martin's storytelling, discussing its themes and their creative process using Unreal Engine for world-building.
I liked two things. One, that it was a dark adult fairy tale. It's got a very clear message: Be careful what you wish for. I've always been fascinated with the original fairy tales, the dark ones - the version of 'The Little Mermaid' where the mermaid dies at the end, the original Brothers Grimm.
In particular, there's a new central antagonist: a religious cult the protagonists (Jovovich and Dave Bautista) have to contend with.
