During 2024, UK firms each experienced an average of more than 753,341 malicious attempts to breach their online and IT systems, according to analysis by specialist business ISP Beaming. This marked a significant increase, reflecting an alarming trend in the frequency of cyber attacks. The report highlights that every 42 seconds, a business faced a potential breach, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures to combat this relentless threat.
"The rise of automated cyber attacks means the internet has never been more dangerous, and we expect it will become even more so as hackers use AI," said Beaming managing director Sonia Blizzard. This statement underscores the evolution of threat tactics in the cyber landscape, suggesting that advanced technologies like AI are not only accessible to legitimate businesses but are also being leveraged by malicious entities to amplify their attack capabilities.
The most frequent targets last year were remotely-controlled IoT devices, with more than 161 daily attacks targeting applications such as building control systems, security cameras, and industrial automation systems. This demonstrates not only the growing vulnerabilities in IoT infrastructure but also raises concerns about the security standards governing smart devices in commercial settings.
Beaming identified more than a million IP addresses being used to launch cyber attacks on UK businesses - and traced more than a quarter of those to locations in China. This statistic highlights the global nature of cyber threats and the complex geopolitical factors at play, as businesses must navigate risk not just within their own networks, but also in relation to international actors.
