The Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon has continued its cyber intrusions into telecommunications companies globally, even after being exposed last year for accessing US carriers. A report from Recorded Future revealed that Salt Typhoon breached several telecoms and internet service providers worldwide between December and January. Their tactics involve exploiting vulnerabilities in Cisco's IOS software to gain root access, which allows them significant control. Experts emphasize the ongoing threat posed by Salt Typhoon, underscoring the severity of their aggressive tactics in compromising communication networks.
They're super active, and they continue to be super active. I think there's just a general under-appreciation for how aggressive they are being in turning telecommunications networks into Swiss cheese.
To carry out this latest campaign of intrusions, Salt Typhoon has targeted the internet-exposed web interfaces of Cisco's IOS software, exploiting vulnerabilities to gain root privileges.
