As the use of drones in military operations expands, so does the development of counter-UAV technologies to neutralize potential threats. Recent findings indicate a notable surge in cyberespionage activities, particularly centered on acquiring sensitive information about drone technologies and their supply chains. This concern is heightened during conflict periods, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas confrontation. Resecurity's report highlights a significant interest from cybercriminal groups and state actors, focusing not only on technology specifics but also on the buyers, signaling reconnaissance for future cyberattacks against these entities.
"Cybercriminal groups and foreign nation-state actors express a significant interest in these technologies," Los Angeles-based Resecurity states in a new report.
The increase in malicious cyber activity targeting drones was especially notable during periods of local conflicts, including the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas confrontation.
Resecurity notes they have spotted multiple postings on the dark web by actors looking to acquire sensitive military and intellectual property documents related to drones.
Such tactics enable foreign actors to optimize their efforts and blur attribution, operating under the guise of cybercriminals.
