Tánaiste Simon Harris has announced the acceleration of purchasing sonar and radar technology to secure Irish maritime interests and critical underwater infrastructure following increased threats from Russian vessels. The Irish Defence Forces will engage in the Common Information Sharing Environment (CISE), an alliance involving 10 nations for improved intelligence on maritime threats. This move aligns with heightened concerns after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and aims to fortify security and collaborative efforts with EU countries against various maritime risks, including drug trafficking operations.
The presence of clandestine Russian vessels has caused alarm over the vulnerability of key underwater infrastructure, especially since Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
By signing up to this initiative, Ireland will now be in a stronger position in terms of information and intelligence-sharing when it comes to our maritime environment.
The network, known as the Common Information Sharing Environment (CISE), will enable sharing of both classified and unclassified information between the partner groups.
Plans are also in place to use CISE in anti-drug-trafficking operations, further enhancing maritime security.
