Social Security numbers (SSNs) were initially created in 1936 to track accounts by the Social Security Administration, yet have evolved into a primary form of identification used across various sectors including employment, healthcare, and education.
From 1973 until June 2011, the area number of a Social Security number was assigned based on the ZIP Code provided in the application, allowing some inference about a person's birthplace from their SSN.
