$40B lost to sound and sports piracy: New government report

"Since the release of the 2024 Notorious Markets List, there have been notable efforts to address the widespread availability of counterfeit and pirated goods in some online and physical markets. The United States commends these efforts and encourages governments, right holders, service providers, and the owners and operators of these and other markets, including those newly identified in the 2025 NML, to engage in sustained and meaningful efforts to combat piracy and counterfeiting."

"The 61-page report describes each of them, their general purpose and particular specialties. Countries around the world are represented. During the past year, several enforcement authorities conducted successful actions against online piracy markets. Argentina reportedly dismantled an operation that facilitated illegal subscriptions to a TV service. Brazil implemented an anti-piracy system called Operation 404, assisted by the U.S. Torrent Galaxy went offline after a Dutch court blocked the site."

The U.S. Trade Representative released a comprehensive 61-page report identifying notorious markets for counterfeiting and piracy, including platforms like DHGate, MegaCloud, Private Layer, and The Pirate Bay. The report catalogs piracy operations worldwide and their specializations. Despite the extensive documentation of illegal markets, the report highlights positive developments, noting that enforcement authorities in multiple countries have successfully taken action against online piracy. Notable successes include Argentina dismantling illegal TV subscription operations, Brazil implementing Operation 404 anti-piracy system with U.S. assistance, and Dutch courts blocking Torrent Galaxy. The U.S. government encourages sustained efforts from governments, rights holders, and service providers to combat piracy and counterfeiting.
