Baseball involves frequent high-speed and physical risks for players. A minor-league affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers in Tulsa suspended its bat dog program after a prospect was injured. Kendall George, a fast, 2023 first-round pick, injured his knee when he jumped out of the way of a bat dog as he scored in a home win. The injury occurred during the dog’s bat-retrieval role, which is used by many minor league teams to retrieve discarded bats and entertain fans. George’s initial MRI showed no ligament damage, and surgery may be avoided. The team had used bat dogs for five seasons, and players previously said they enjoyed watching the dogs work.
"Kendall George, a first-round pick for the Dodgers in 2023 known for his blazing speed, injured his knee when he jumped out of the way of a bat dog as he came home to score in Tulsa's home win over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Monday."
"ESPN reported that the 21-year-old's initial MRI revealed no ligament damage and may avoid surgery. The Drillers have used bat dogs for the last five seasons."
