On July 7, 1998, Jeff Shaw made MLB history as the first player to play in the All-Star Game for a team before any regular-season appearances. Shaw was traded to the Dodgers from the Reds just days prior, following a request to wear his former team's jersey during the game. He later became a vital piece of the Dodgers bullpen, achieving 25 saves with a 2.55 ERA in the second half of the season. Shaw signed a three-year, $15 million contract, saving 129 games and ending as the franchise leader in saves until surpassed by Eric Gagne.

Shaw was traded on July 4, from the Cincinnati Reds to the Dodgers in exchange for Paul Konerko and Dennys Reyes, representing L.A. in the All-Star Game after a request was made by the Reds for him to wear their jersey.
During his time with the Dodgers, Shaw racked up 25 saves and posted a 2.55 ERA during the second half, making him one of the highest-paid closers in MLB.
Over the duration of his three-year contract, Shaw saved 129 games and remained the franchise leader in saves until Eric Gagne surpassed him in 2004.
