"The death of King Tuheitia is a moment of great sadness for followers of Kiingitanga, Maoridom and the entire nation," said spokesperson Rahui Papa.
"Tuheitia's unwavering commitment to his people and his tireless efforts to uphold the values and traditions of the Kiingitanga have left an indelible mark on our nation," posted Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
The king's position was largely ceremonial but important in New Zealand, aiming to preserve Maori culture and end land sales to non-Indigenous people.
Earlier this year, Tuheitia asked for whales to be granted the same rights as humans, showcasing his commitment to environmental protection.
