The new ChaTraMue shop in Westminster, Orange County, marks a significant entry for the family behind Jitlada restaurant into the world of Thai tea. The shop aims to teach patrons about Thai culture through its meticulous tea brewing method, known as 'chak cha,' which highlights the rich flavors of Thai tea sourced directly from a farm in Chiang Rai. The signature orange sherbet-colored beverage not only showcases the deep red tea but also allows customers to personalize their sweetness level. Nick and Sirine Bunkua hope to introduce a taste of authentic Thai tea culture to their new community.
"It's called chak cha," says Sirine Singsanong Bunkua, standing behind the counter at the new ChaTraMue in Westminster. "You pour, pour, pour, pour," she says, transferring the darkening liquid from one pitcher to another.
"ChaTraMue was actually the originator of Thai tea," Nick says. He grew up drinking Thai tea from the various ChaTraMue locations scattered all over Thailand.
"It's the type of milk tea you can have multiple times a day," he says. "Every time I get on a bus or train in Thailand, I grab one..."
