Izak Rankine of the Adelaide Crows is under scrutiny from the AFL integrity unit for allegedly using a homophobic slur during a match against Collingwood. The AFL confirmed awareness of the alleged incident and is investigating. Rankine may face a lengthy ban if found guilty. Recent months have seen multiple players suspended for similar offenses, including Riak Andrew and Jack Graham. In 2024, three players received suspensions for using homophobic slurs, with significant penalties imposed for the offenses.
"The AFL is aware of an alleged matter with the Integrity Unit making inquiries," the League said in a statement.
If an investigation goes ahead and finds Rankine guilty, he is at risk of a lengthy ban from playing.
Multiple AFL players over the past few months have been handed bans for using homophobic slurs during matches.
Three AFL players were suspended for using homophobic slurs in 2024, including Port Adelaide player Jeremy Finlayson and Gold Coast's Wil Powell.
