The U.S. Army has officially announced a ban on transgender individuals joining the military and has paused all plans for gender transition procedures. This decision comes amid a confusing set of policies, with assurances that serving individuals with gender dysphoria will be treated with dignity and respect. Current regulations may still permit ongoing medical care during transition, but trans individuals are required to be housed according to their assigned sex at birth. This ban echoes similar policies from previous administrations and raises questions about the future of currently serving trans personnel.
The U.S. Army has made it official: It will no longer allow transgender individuals to join the military and will stop performing or facilitating procedures associated with gender transition for service members.
Effective immediately, all new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are paused, and all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition for service members are paused.
...Individuals with gender dysphoria have volunteered to serve our country and will be treated with dignity and respect, so it's not clear if trans people currently serving will be discharged.
The memo said that trans troops currently receiving medical care for gender dysphoria or transition will continue to receive treatment "consistent with the standard of care." At the same time, the memo enforces policies that strip trans service members of recognition.
