"Stonewall's Rainbow Laces campaign is an annual, visible show of support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport and involves athletes from elite to amateur level in various different sports who don rainbow-coloured laces alongside their normal kit to highlight equality and acceptance."
"discrimination by someone else's behaviour, attitudes or language while exercising or trying to exercise"
"As an elite athlete I've had the privilege of winning gold medals, and that achievement will always be part of my story. While I'm no longer competing at the elite level, movement and exercise remain essential to my wellbeing, they support both my physical and mental health."
Stonewall relaunched its Rainbow Laces campaign for a 13th year as a visible show of support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport, with athletes wearing rainbow-coloured laces. A YouGov survey of 2,122 adults on 22–23 December 2025 found 37% of LGBTQ+ respondents experienced "discrimination by someone else's behaviour, attitudes or language while exercising or trying to exercise," compared with 13% of all respondents. Thirty-four percent of LGBTQ+ respondents felt their sexuality was a barrier to taking part in sport, 45% were not meeting recommended vigorous exercise levels, and 76% reported poor mental health versus 44% of all respondents. Dame Kelly Holmes, a double-Olympic gold medallist who came out as lesbian in 2022, will host a roundtable with Stonewall to explore removing barriers to LGBTQ+ participation in sport.
