The U.S. Justice Department has negotiated a settlement with Boeing, allowing the aircraft manufacturer to avoid criminal prosecution related to allegations of misleading regulators about the 737 Max. The company is set to pay over $1.1 billion, which includes $445 million for victim compensation. While the resolution aims to provide financial accountability and enhance aviation safety, some family members of the crash victims feel that it does not sufficiently hold Boeing accountable, preferring public trials and harsher penalties for the company and its officials.
Under the agreement in principle that still needs to be finalized, Boeing would pay and invest more than $1.1bn, including an additional $445m for the crash victims' families.
Nothing will diminish the victims' losses, but this resolution holds Boeing financially accountable, provides finality and compensation for the families and makes an impact for the safety of future air travelers.
