CA Lawmakers Scramble to Fix Controversial 'Lemon Law'
Briefly

California's lemon law, once heralded for its consumer protections, is under scrutiny following recent amendments aimed at appeasing car manufacturers. Lawmakers are racing to reverse changes that limited consumer rights, requiring owners to initiate claims more actively. This has led to discontent among consumer advocates and confusion regarding the law's structure. Some lawmakers compare the situation to 'Alice in Wonderland' due to its contradictory nature. With a legislative deadline approaching, there is pressure to pass new adjustments, which may result in a confusing two-tier lemon law that weakens protections for consumers still facing defective vehicles.
"I think what we have is a messy and frankly - all due respect - illogical resulting situation," said Sen. Roger Niello, reflecting on the recent changes.
"With hope of granting relief to the courts, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation last year... but that law divided car makers."
"Now, legislators are racing to pass the changes before the new law takes effect April 1, amid concerns about a confusing two-tier lemon law."
