Southern California communities impacted by wildfires benefitted from Gibson Dunn's pro bono assistance in organizing the FireAid benefit concert. Led by partner Stephen Fackler, the firm contributed by advising on various legal aspects including media contracts, tax strategy, and compliance with charity solicitation regulations. The team worked to prevent ticket scalping by negotiating with Ticketmaster and other resellers. Fackler faced a significant time constraint, reviewing contracts just hours before the concert, yet successfully ensured the event's legal viability, which raised over $60 million for affected communities.
The time challenge was extreme. I was reviewing contracts as late as ... hours before the concert started.
We identified trends in state tax rules and which states had clear-cut rulings by reaching out to attorneys general and secretaries of state.
Gibson Dunn handled the review of media distribution agreements for the concert streamed on over 25 platforms ranging from social media to theaters.
FireAid needed legal help to communicate with Ticketmaster to lock out the resale market for concert tickets to prevent scalpers.
