Michael Ballweg, the founder of the Querdenker anti-lockdown movement, faces nearly 9,450 counts of fraud and tax evasion for misusing donations intended for the group.
Prosecutors allege that Ballweg raised approximately 1.2 million dollars from supporters but only allocated 844,000 dollars to fund the Querdenker movement's activities.
Ballweg, appearing in court, expressed confidence in his defense, stating, "Everything is fine," while supporters rallied behind him as the trial commenced.
The Querdenker movement emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, known for its protests against government health measures, including lockdowns, masks, and vaccines.
