Trump Officials Demand End to "DEI" Within UN Women's and Children's Programs
Briefly

Amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, U.S. officials have introduced amendments to UNICEF's program documents, demanding the removal of references to gender ideology, diversity, equity, and inclusion. This historical move aims to refocus UNICEF's efforts on children's rights without the influence of what the U.S. terms 'gender ideology.' The amendments have faced opposition from most of UNICEF's board members, with only Oman and Nigeria supporting them, resulting in a rare failure to pass unanimously. The U.S. justifies this action as necessary for promoting equal opportunities.
The amendments pressured the agency, which focuses on children's rights and providing protections for disadvantaged children, to erase language that promotes gender ideology.
The U.S. also specifically directed the agency to embrace anti-LGBTQ hate, saying that it should not include programming based upon gender ideology.
In a statement, U.S. acting representative to the UN Economic and Social Council Jonathan Shrier said that the U.S. had 'no other choice' but to take action.
The program documents, without the U.S.'s additions, passed 31 to 1, making it the first-ever time the program agenda did not pass unanimously.
