A campaign is escalating to save the world's first YMCA, which also hosts central London's largest gym, from imminent closure after being sold to a property firm. 74-year-old Patrick Joy, a club member, has filed for an injunction to prevent the closure, emphasizing its importance for health and rehabilitation for him and the community. The Save Central YMCA campaign argues that the club offers significant community services that contribute to physical wellbeing and social support. Members fear that its closure will lead to increased pressure on local health services.
The loss of this facility will just put pressure back on the NHS. The poor people will have to join a long queue again, rather than using the facilities at the YMCA.
Save Central YMCA Campaign group said the club provided 'extensive exercise, wellbeing, social and educational spaces for the community, local schools and health providers'.
