Hammersmith Bridge, a Grade II*-listed suspension bridge, has remained closed to vehicles since 2019 due to safety concerns. While the bridge has allowed pedestrian and cyclist access since 2021, discussions over funding repairs have been ongoing. A design studio, Sybarite, and engineering firm Buro Happold proposed an innovative plan to restore vehicle access with new features while preserving the historic fabric of the bridge. However, local council opposition raises questions about the feasibility of these ambitious designs, emphasizing the need for urgent action and investment in urban renewal.
The time to act is now-we must invest in its revival and unlock the full potential of the surrounding area through strategic urban renewal.
London's bridges are powerful symbols of our city's identity. My vision for Hammersmith Bridge is both deeply rooted in its historic legacy and boldly focused on the future.
