First look: designs have been revealed for the National Gallery's biggest ever revamp
"Kengo Kuma, known for designing the Tokyo Olympic stadium, has been selected to create the new wing of the National Gallery, marking a significant shift in its collection policy."
"The National Gallery's Project Domani represents the largest transformation in its 200-year history, with plans to expand its collection to include modern art, potentially causing friction with Tate."
The National Gallery has chosen Kengo Kuma to design its new wing, part of a £750 million transformation project. This decision follows an international competition that included 65 firms. The new wing aims to expand the gallery's collection to include 20th and 21st-century art, which may create tensions with Tate due to a previous agreement limiting collections to pre-1900 art. The new building will replace St Vincent House and is expected to open in the early 2030s.
