2025 marks a significant anniversary for art deco, which emerged in the 1910s and was named after the 1925 International Exhibition in Paris. Recently, a list by Time Out named the world's top nine art deco buildings, curated by Dominic Lutyens. Among these, three structures from London were highlighted: The Daily Express Building, which topped the list, Eltham Palace, and another unnamed building. The Daily Express features a striking vitrolite façade and a lavish lobby, while Eltham Palace showcases a fusion of Tudor and art deco styles.
The Daily Express Building on Fleet Street is proclaimed the greatest art deco building in the world, featuring a tiered façade made mostly of vitrolite.
Lutyens describes the Daily Express Building's exterior as being adorned only by gleaming, slimline chrome bands forming a subtle grid, while its lobby is sumptuously decorated.
Eltham Palace, located in southeast London, features both the remains of a Tudor palace and art deco additions from the 1930s, ranking sixth on the list.
Art deco's glamorous craftsmanship, bold geometric shapes, and opulent colors remain highly admired as we approach the centenary of its naming in 2025.
