Londoners are bracing for a 31% increase in water bills starting April 1, where Thames Water customers will see average annual bills rise by £203, totaling £639. This surge affects 16 million customers, contributing significantly to the financial strain of ongoing cost of living challenges. While averages in England and Wales rise by 26%, some providers like Southern Water impose even steeper increases, hitting 47%. Consumer advocates demand urgent measures to assist impacted households, as these hikes mark the largest since the water industry's privatization in 1989.
The Consumer Council for Water (CCW) stated stronger and fairer support is urgently needed to protect struggling households from the largest rise in water bills since the industry's privatization 36 years ago.
Water UK confirmed that companies would invest around £20 billion from April 2025 to March 2026 in what would be the highest level of expenditure ever in a single year.
