Dr. Deborah Burns, a consultant paediatrician, has struggled to work after her son William passed away from meningococcal septicaemia at Homerton hospital. During the inquest, she expressed feelings of betrayal towards her medical colleagues for ignoring her warnings regarding critical treatment errors. Despite her efforts to ensure immediate antibiotic treatment, her son did not receive them until more than an hour after his admission. Burns highlighted multiple failures in his medical care, leaving her in emotional turmoil over the loss and the oversight experienced.
It is impossible for words to describe adequately the pain of this immense loss and the feelings of betrayal that I feel about William's death and the aftermath.
From my direct experience as a witness, plus what I've seen in the notes and in statements, it's my opinion that the medical staff involved in William's care failed to observe him in any clinically useful way.
In terms of antibiotics, I believe that these were only given when they were because I was there. I raised a concern about the lack of antibiotics eight times before they were administered.
William had one cannula in his left antecubital fossa... which meant he could only have one medication at a time.
