Three people had already left the house before the arrival of emergency services, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters from Erith, Bexley, Plumstead, and Greenwich fire stations responded to the scene of the blaze, which caused significant damage to the first floor.
The fire was brought under control just before 10.20pm as firefighters tackled the blaze caused by an unattended candle, highlighting the need for fire safety measures in homes.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson emphasized the risks of unattended candles, stating, "Candles are one of the most common causes of fire. It's really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from anything else that can easily catch alight."
For safety, it is suggested to consider using battery-powered, flameless LED candles instead, which are safe even if you fall asleep, despite their higher upfront cost.
