David Cheneler, a 73-year-old registered sex offender, has been sentenced to two years in prison after being identified by Live Facial Recognition technology in London. Caught with a six-year-old girl, he breached his Sexual Offence Prevention Order, which forbade him from being alone with children under 14. The Met Police employed LFR to match faces against a database of offenders, preventing potential abuse. Cheneler had developed a relationship with the girl's family, raising concerns about trust violations and abuse. His past includes a nine-year sentence for multiple child abuse offenses.
Met Police Det Con Adam Pearce emphasized that had Cheneler not been identified through LFR, he could have potentially abused the child, highlighting the technology's crucial role.
Lindsey Chiswick stated that the application of LFR is vital in preventing harm, as it allows for the swift identification of individuals subject to restrictions.
