Gary Lineker will end his 26-year tenure as the host of BBC's Match of the Day next month. He became the show's fifth regular presenter in 1999 and has been its longest-serving host. While Lineker will continue to host FA Cup matches for another season, he plans to retire from his BBC roles after the World Cup final, creating a significant transition for fans of the show.

Lineker chuckles when it's suggested to him that the BBC have needed not one but three people to replace him, so big are his shoes to fill.

It's a massive commitment, he says. Those three have all got families, and if you're saying someone is going to do it for the next 10 or 20 years, then your weekend is gone.
