Campaigners celebrate court ruling to decolonise' Kampala
Briefly

Campaigners in Uganda celebrated a court ruling that mandates the removal of colonial monuments and the renaming of streets that honor British colonial figures. The ruling by Justice Musa Ssekaana directs city authorities to replace names like Maj Gen Henry Edward Colville and Frederick Lugard with titles reflecting Uganda's cultural identity. This decision follows a five-year campaign, including a 2020 petition signed by over 5,800 people and a lawsuit claiming human rights violations. While the mayor expressed disappointment over the judgment's lack of historical context, activists see this as a pivotal move against colonial injustices.
It is essential to break free from the legacy of colonial exploitation, oppression, and impunity by embracing names that truly reflect Uganda's independence and cultural identity.
I think it's long overdue for us to decolonise our streets. I believe we can have our history, we can keep records, but not celebrate some crooks and historical figureheads that brutalised Ugandans.
