The Metropolitan Police have issued warnings regarding the dangers of unsupervised swimming following tragic events in London, including the recovery of a teenage boy's body and the search for missing 11-year-old Kaliyah Coa. The rise in open water incidents, particularly in warm weather, has raised public concern. Chief Inspector Rob Ranstead emphasized the deceptive nature of seemingly calm waters, which can hide strong currents and other dangers. The Royal Lifesaving Society's report noted at least 125 child drowning deaths in England from 2019 to 2023, underscoring the need for increased awareness and caution among swimmers.
Open water may appear calm and inviting, but it can be dangerously deceptive. Strong currents, sudden drops, hidden hazards and cold-water shock can affect even the strongest swimmers.
We absolutely understand the natural draw of rivers, lakes and open water across the city. However, we have sadly seen a recent rise in incidents where people have got into difficulty.
