Bill Sweeney, the RFU chief executive, is threatening to relocate England's rugby union home from Twickenham, citing licensing restrictions that limit non-rugby events. This move comes after missing opportunities for high-grossing concerts like those by Beyonce, which could boost revenue significantly. The RFU's proposal to the Richmond council includes increasing allowed events from three to fifteen per year. Despite plans for a major renovation of Twickenham starting in 2027, Sweeney warns that alternatives in Milton Keynes or Birmingham will be considered if restrictions persist.
Sweeney highlighted the limitations imposed by Richmond council, stating, "Twickenham is empty for 340 days a year, which severely restricts our ability to generate revenue from non-rugby events."
He expressed frustration about missing out on lucrative opportunities, saying, "We’ve lost the chance to host significant events like Beyonce concerts due to the restrictive event licensing at Twickenham."
