'Positive community engagement' at Romford mosque consultation event
Briefly

The Havering Islamic Cultural Centre (HICC) held a community drop-in event on February 27 at The Brewery shopping centre to share plans for relocating its mosque to South Street. The proposed site, previously Smokey's Shack, follows a compulsory purchase by Havering Council for HICC's existing location, necessitating a new facility. Tahir Sharif, leader of HICC's development committee, noted significant community interest in the plans, with discussions involving diverse opinions. Funding for the new site will surpass the council's compensation by £4.5 million, which HICC intends to raise independently.
"It's been great - there's been lots of interest, so hopefully we've had some positive engagement with the community. We've spoken to loads of different people, both pro and anti..."
"As part of the compulsory purchase order of HICC's current site, Havering Council is legally obliged to pay for an 'equivalent like-for-like' site."
