'Really special' Harold Hill youth club shut down by council pushes to reopen
Briefly

The Friday Night Youth Club in Dagnam Park Drive has been suspended by Havering Council due to incidents involving alcohol and fireworks outside the community center. Organizers Russell and Claire Mears, who have voluntarily managed the club for four years, argue that the council's decision contradicts past commitments to provide support, like a paid youth worker. They have provided extensive opportunities for local youth, including outdoor activities and leadership courses, highlighting the club's vital role in the community, especially given the lack of alternative leisure options for young people in the area.
Russell Mears stated, "[The incidents] were outside the youth club and with people we weren't supervising, but Havering [Council] said...we are going to have to suspend you."
Russell highlighted their efforts, saying, "For four years, we have delivered over 1,000 hours of youth work and secured over 30,000 of activities for the children of Harold Hill."
He emphasized the need for the club by noting, "Our members were really keen that we started up again, because there's nothing else going on for them in that area."
