Charges for using the new Silvertown tunnel in east London have raised concerns from the City Bridge Foundation about the potential influx of traffic at Tower Bridge. Starting Monday, drivers will pay tolls to access the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels. These fees, aimed at funding public transport improvements, may lead motorists to choose free crossings like Tower Bridge, increasing congestion. The foundation's COO emphasized the need to protect the historic structure, urging TfL to monitor traffic impacts closely. Other crossings, such as the Rotherhithe tunnel, may also face heightened traffic as drivers seek to avoid tolls.
It's vital we do everything we can to protect the 130-year-old structure... We would urge TfL to closely monitor any impact on traffic flow.
The introduction of tolls could cause motorists to divert from the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels, significantly increasing traffic at Tower Bridge.
