Around 4,000 litres of diesel leaked from a bus depot in Croydon, severely impacting wildlife along the River Wandle and raising alarms for community members. Liberal Democrat MP Bobby Dean expressed concern over the significant pollution incident, noting the community's previous efforts to restore the river. The Environment Agency is coordinating a multi-agency response to address the spill, which has resulted in animals being coated in oil. Local officials are advising the public to avoid contact with affected waters as cleanup efforts begin.
The community has been working so hard over the years to clean up the River Wandle and so it's devastating to see it hit by such a major pollution incident.
This should never have happened and those responsible must be held to account.
The spill had left animals covered in oil at Watermeads Nature Reserve in Mitcham.
Diffuse pollution from industrial estates was a common and serious problem in the area.
