The UK is set to debut its first district heat network utilizing waste heat from data centers, a collaborative initiative between the Old Oak & Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) and Hemiko. This project, part of a broader plan outlined by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, aims to deliver heating to around 9,000 homes and businesses, utilizing heat from local data centers such as Vantage's campuses. Hemiko will invest significantly in the initiative, which also promotes sustainability and job creation in the local community, with expansions planned in coming years.
Funding for the project comes largely from Hemiko, which will invest £63 million in the first phases, growing to around £600 million by 2040.
By taking surplus heat from local data centers, we don't need to burn gas in the middle of a city to heat people's homes.
