Private hire drivers in the UK are set to go on a 24-hour strike, protesting for better pay and working conditions. The strike, organized by the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB), will include drivers logging off apps like Uber and Bolt in major cities. This is part of a larger international movement, with participants from various countries including the US and Nigeria. The IWGB highlights the struggles faced by drivers, including long hours and inadequate protections, stressing that many feel they are merely surviving rather than thriving in their work.
The IWGB argues that falling fares, long hours, and a lack of basic worker protections are pushing drivers to their limits.
A two-hour walkout is also planned at Heathrow Airport from 7am, though the airport has stated that terminal operations are expected to continue as normal.
Nader Awaad, of the IWGB, said: Drivers around the world today are not living but survivingâ we're hanging on by a thread.
