In Los Angeles, five unauthorized immigrants were arrested for fraudulently using counterfeit electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to withdraw funds meant for low-income families. They possessed over 160 counterfeit cards and allegedly stole about $25,480 from multiple benefit programs. The U.S. Department of Justice highlighted the significant impact of their actions on vulnerable communities. EBT fraud remains a significant issue in California, with over $126 million reported stolen in 2024 alone.
These defendants who are illegally in the United States targeted and stole from some of the poorest members of our community, contributing to significant financial losses.
The amount the men are accused of stealing is just a drop in the bucket of the total that goes missing every year, highlighting the rampant problem of EBT fraud.
