AIDS Healthcare Foundation settles class-action tenant case over squalid living conditions
Briefly

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, facing a class-action lawsuit over poor living conditions at the Madison Hotel on Skid Row, will pay $575,000 in a settlement. The lawsuit, initiated in 2020, highlighted severe issues such as mold, vermin, and plumbing failures that the nonprofit neglected, putting residents in dire situations. With about 200 tenants sharing facilities, the foundation's failure to maintain the property has prompted extra measures to improve management and habitability moving forward.
In addition to the monetary settlement, the resolution requires the foundation to seek expert advice and undertake training on property management for the Madison. Following a history of elevator malfunctions that endangered residents, the foundation has been directed to hire a consultant to evaluate the building's elevator system. This comes after similar previous issues, including a historical payment of $832,000 to settle another case involving elderly and disabled tenants struck by elevator failures.
