Commentary: Trump priorities clear: Derail medical and scientific research, invade MacArthur Park
Briefly

The government's priorities are focused on immigration enforcement, adding resources for ICE and Border Patrol while cutting funding for medical, climate, and weather-related programs. A recent intervention at MacArthur Park showcased federal agents in a show of force, causing concern among local officials about its appropriateness. Mayor Karen Bass termed the actions as outrageous and politically motivated, designed to provoke fear. The area suffers from significant social issues like homelessness and drug trade, indicating that military-style interventions may not address these underlying problems effectively.
On Monday morning, federal agents on horseback and in armored vehicles descended on MacArthur Park in a show of force. Children playing in the park were ushered to safer ground, Mayor Karen Bass said at a news conference.
It's outrageous and un-American that we have federal armed vehicles in our parks when nothing is going on in our parks, Mayor Bass stated.
The event looked like a staging for a TikTok video, said City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, highlighting the absurdity of the situation.
Billions of dollars have been added for border and ICE agents while billions more have been trimmed from medical, climate and weather-related resources. Immigration is not the greatest threat to our health and security.
