In a significant advancement for fire recovery, the EPA announced the completion of the initial phase of hazardous debris removal in areas affected by the Eaton and Pacific Palisades fires. Approximately 9,201 buildings were cleared, representing two-thirds of the burned structures, while about one-third remains pending cleanup by the Army Corps of Engineers. The efforts, supported by 1,700 workers, managed to remove over 300 tons of hazardous materials despite challenges posed by winter storms, marking the agency’s largest wildfire response to date.
A record-breaking number of people worked to meet the Feb. 25 debris clearance deadline set by the Trump administration after the January fires.
Cheree Peterson noted that 1,700 people were involved in the hazardous debris removal, making it the largest wildfire response in EPA's history.
