The EPA's decision to designate Lario Park in Los Angeles County for processing hazardous fire debris has driven significant local opposition. Cities such as Duarte, Azusa, Irwindale, and Baldwin Park have collectively expressed their concerns about potential health risks posed by the processing of toxic materials, including lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles. Local leaders criticized the EPA for not consulting them beforehand and emphasized the importance of resident safety. Despite these concerns, the EPA has stated preparations for the site have already been completed and it will begin operations soon.
We are extremely disappointed with the lack of respect to our local residents for not being notified of the EPA's cleanup efforts and having toxic materials transported to our backyards.
The potential risks associated with hazardous materials, particularly lithium electric vehicle batteries, concern local leaders for the health and safety of residents.
