A rescue team, including biologists from multiple agencies, worked to save the endangered northern tidewater gobies from Topanga Lagoon, which was threatened by sediment from the Palisades fire. Despite challenges such as the seasonal population low point and an abrupt lagoon breach, the team effectively captured 760 fish, surpassing their target of 400. The operation occurs as rain forecasted for the weekend poses additional risk to the remaining fish species in the area, emphasizing both the urgency and success of the rescue amidst ongoing environmental challenges.
"The goby gods are working with us," said Rosi Dagit, principal conservation biologist for the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains and ringleader of the rescue.
"Oh, look at that one!" exclaimed Dagit, as they exceeded their goal by rescuing 760 healthy gobies, highlighting the success of their efforts in a dire situation.
